Session 3 PART 1: Listening comprehension

The rich and the famous – do we all aspire to live their lifestyle?

Listen to one of these rap songs and try to transcribe the lyrics. In your F2F classroom, pair up to fill in your gaps, and then group together to piece the whole song. Then check the words with the lyrics in the accordion below the songs.

It’s eight a.m. I roll out my silk sheets
Get fly crash the limo back seats
Lookin’ in the faces
Of some ladies that I never met
On the interview tip, no sweat
They ask me questions
I throw the words back
They say they write facts
I know that’s bull crap
They’re kickin’ drama
But then drama’s my middle name
That’s the price ya pay for big fame
The cellular phone rings
Dont wanta pick it up
But it’s my J-O-be I gotta kick it up
Another damn reporter
On the line with a word quiz
I gotta show cause I’m livin’ with the show
Biz. Out the limo, to the plane
In the pourin’ rain
I hate flyin’
But there’s no time for slow trains
another show to do
I gotta catch my crew
They left last night
In the bus around two
The plane’s a small one
No fun at all
Bouncin’ round the air
Like a tennis ball
When it touches down
I wanna kiss the ground
But it’s time to wreck a new town
Get to the arena, meet up with the crew
They tell me all the speakers blew
The cordless don’t work
Sound man’s a jerk
Somebody’s gonna get hurt
I’m crazy mad
But my fans want autographs
I turn my angry frowns
Into fake laughs
I can’t be rude
Cause they wouldn’t understand
I ain’t human no more, I’m a superman

You can try
But you’ll never understand this
You can try
But you’ll never understand this
Try and try
But you’ll never understand this
The lifestyles of the rich and infamous

Four hours till show time oh well
I might as well check in the hotel
Get a little rest
Before it’s time for us to play
Ten brothers standin’ in the hallway
All with demo tapes
They need the hook up
They heard that I was
The one to look up
I can’t ditch ’em
Cause they already saw me
I’ll put my head down
Maybe they’ll ignore me
No chance “Ice what’s goin’ on?”
I listened to twenty-five songs
And after that
The brothers still wouldn’t leave
They started lookin’ at my T.V.
I was gonna break down
If they didn’t jet soon
Snuck across the hall
And crashed in E’s room
But then this freak came in
Thought I was E
Straddled her legs across me
Ripped off her blouse
Pushed her breast against my face
Started girating her waist. Sounds fly,
Like a hype sex thriller?
But see she looked like Godzilla
Pushed her off me
Home girl hit the floor
This is what it’s like on tour
I hit the hallway it was crawlin’ thick
“Could we take this picture real quick?”
Jumped into a pose
That I used a million times before
Took pictures
With the whole damn floor
I couldn’t say no not to my fans
You see they wouldn’t understand

You can try
But you’ll never understand this
Try and try
But you’ll never understand this
You can try
But you’ll never understand this
The lifestyles of the rich and infamous

Now it’s show time, time to flow time
Evil lost the records
But we still gotta go time
The house is packed
Everybody’s on their feet
So I say, “Throw on Rakim’s beat.”
E hits the fader and the crowd is lit
I start bustin’ off some new shit
The stage is so smokey
That I almost fall off, I start inhalin’ it
I’m tryin’ not to cough
I’m catchin’ problems from every angle
The mic cords are tangled
I try to flow smooth
But my words are mangled
Damn near slipped and broke my ankle
If that ain’t enough
The police are hawkin’
Listenin’ real close
To the words I’m talkin’
They want to put a brother like me
In the back seat
Just because I curse the beat
They want to tap my phone
want to keep my crib bugged
Call all my homies
Felonist street thugs
You might say
I think this lifestyle sucks?
I wouldn’t trade it for a million bucks
Although it’s all
Not glamour and gleam
It’s still my dream

You can try
But you’ll never understand this
The lifestyles of the rich and infamous

Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous lyrics © Reach Music Publishing

Always see it on TV

Or read it in the magazines

Celebrities want sympathy

All they do is piss and moan

Inside the Rolling Stone

Talkin’ about how hard life can be

I’d like to see them spend a week

Livin’ life out on the street

I don’t think they would survive

If they could spend a day or two

Walkin’ in someone else’s shoes

I think they’d stumble and they’d fall

They would fall (fall)

Lifestyles of the rich and the famous

They’re always complainin’

Always complainin’

If money is such a problem

Well, they got mansions

Think we should rob them

Well, did you know when you were famous you could kill your wife

And there’s no such thing as 25 to life

As long as you’ve got the cash to pay for Cochran

And did you know if you were caught and you were smokin’ crack

McDonald’s wouldn’t even wanna take you back

You could always just run for mayor of D.C.

I’d like to see them spend a week

Livin’ life out on the street

I don’t think they would survive

If they could spend a day or two

Walking in someone else’s shoes

I think they’d stumble and they’d fall

They would fall

Lifestyles of the rich and the famous

They’re always complainin’

Always complainin’

If money is such a problem

Well, they got mansions

Think we should rob them (rob them)

They would fall

Lifestyles of the rich and the famous

They’re always complainin’

Always complainin’

If money is such a problem

You got so many problems

Think I could solve them

Lifestyles of the rich and famous

We’ll take your clothes, cash, cars and homes, just stop complainin’

Lifestyles of the rich and famous

Lifestyles of the sick and brainless

Some die with the drugs some die

Lifestyles of the sick and brainless

Some die with the drugs, some die nameless

Lifestyles of the sick and brainless

Some die with the drugs, some die nameless

Say everybody wanna be

What they see on the TV

Level up like they CC

Tell me do you love me

Key, key, key, key

The new drug is attention

Me, me, me, me

Now understand why your man double-tapping them

A chick look like Kim Kardashian

Hit the surgeon, what can this buy me

Please, doc, make me look just like Kylie

Shorty rock you will never be them

Try as you might you will never be Kim

Riding my wave this is Adult Swim

They screaming out “No cam!”

I’m laughing at them

You don’t have a surgery b****, you’re hella basic

Staring at the mirror, disgusted, you can’t face it

Pacing, cuz you wanna be a star

Get high, pop pills, forget who you are

What’s the new fad, what’s the new trend

Need some new friends, oh they getting money

What’s the blueprint? Why?

Cuz I just wanna follow your lead

I wanna be anyone of for me

Lifestyles of the sick and brainless

The new drug is attention

Me, me, me, me

Me, me, me, give me lot of likes

If I get a lot of comments, then you know I’m getting hyped

And I’m jealous of the next girl, she got a better life

Oh, it’s cool to be a lesbian, I’m getting into dykes

I do not know what brand clothes are on me

I walk around with the tag like a zombie

Throwing the shade now just like I was a palm tree

I’m looking up through my IG like Wendy

Session 3 PART 2:  Critical Thinking

1/ In your F2F classroom, discuss the denotation and connotation of colloquial expressions in the lyrics you might use in your conversations:  “no sweat” , “[…] is my middle name”, “to hook someone up”, “to ditch someone”, “the house is packed”, “walking in someone else’s shoes” , and any others you find in the three song lyrics. Click on the arrow below each title for the text.

2/ Check out the cultural references in these lines:

  • But see, she looked like Godzilla
  • So I say, “Throw on Rakim’s” beat
  • Inside the Rolling Stone
  • And there’s no such thing as 25 to life
  • As long as you’ve got the cash to pay for Cochran
  • McDonald’s wouldn’t even wanna take you back

How does knowing the cultural references, the schema, help you understand the lyrics better?

3/ Examine the lyrics of the songs more closely for meaning: how do they differ in their message? Keep in mind dates and eras in which they were released.

Think ToK: Areas of Knowledge – Human Sciences (Psychology, Sociology). How does the line “The new drug is attention” bode for the young generation raised on the Internet, watching MTV videos and listening to rap music nowadays?

Compare your ideas with the ideas in these two articles:

Session 3 PART 3: Oral Communication: Share your understanding – explanation

Forum groups together

Based on activities you completed in Session 1, 2 and 3, explain your thoughts on mainstream and alternative lifestyles.

  • What do you think “mainstream” means nowadays?
  • What constitutes an “alternative” lifestyle nowadays?

Think of yourself and possible choices you might have in the future, including rich and famous (which, of course, can be achieved in a variety of ways, not just music).

  • What lifestyle might you want to pursue for starters?

You may want to write out your ideas first in a bullet-point list. Practice your talk a few times. Try to speak rather than read a prepared text. Record your audio or video response on this FLIPGRID:
